Owning a shade sail is ordinarily a great thing, right up until you have to clean it.It’s not easy keeping a shade sail clean, but let’s make it as simple as possible with these ten tips.
While not necessarily part of ‘cleaning’ the shade sail, proper installation is essential to maintaining it. Improper installation can cause it to get damaged or worse.
Clean Regularly. This may seem obvious, but the longer you wait between cleanings and more trash and dirt that accumulates, the harder it will be to get clean when the time comes.
Avoid Using Strong Detergents
If you need to use a detergent to clean away a stain or similar blemish on your shade sail, don’t use detergents with strong chemicals, which can damage the fabric.
Stick to something simple like dish washing soap, which will usually get the job done.
Be on the Lookout for Weak Spots. Check the fabric of your shade sail occasionally see if you can find any areas that are wearing out.
Places of wear have the potential to become large holes or tears, so keep an eye out for them to catch them early.
Don’t Forget to Check The Edges
Just like the fabric, you need to check the edges as well so that you can take action before a problem occurs. When your shade sails were installed, they would have been installed using reinforced hems. Check the conditions of these hems from time to time.
Keep Away From Fire. While this sounds obvious, few people realise that fires and grills, sparks and smoke are bad for the health of your shade sail. They can stain the fabric, burn holes into it, or worse, set the whole thing on fire.
Take Down When Not In Use. Any item that gets continually used will suffer over time from sun exposure, weather, and its own weight. If possible, take your shade sail down when not being used.
Store it in dry areas. When you do take your sun shade down, be sure to store it properly in a dry area where it won’t get wet.Shade sails that get wet will fall apart much more quickly.
Set It Up With A Partner
When it’s time to set up your shade sail again, do it properly with someone to help you, this way you’ll avoid dragging it across the ground or unfolding it in a manner that’s going to cause unnecessary wear or damage.
